International Women’s Day

Yes, she can!

Every year, on the 8th of March, the world celebrates the international women’s day. Twenty four hours dedicated for all the women around the world, the mother, the daughter, the sister, and all the great women who have played vital roles in the society, and positively impacted their surrounding communities.  This day proudly recalls the political, social and cultural achievements women have accomplished throughout the years.

The theme of the international women’s day of 2018 was “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”. It focused on strengthening the rural women, granting them all the rights they deserve, and assuring their wellbeing. In light of this theme, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has organized exhibitions as a platform to discuss several issues around the life of Rural Women (UNESCO, 2018). However, international women’s day of 2019 has adopted the theme: Think equal, Build smart, Innovate for change. As the theme suggests, this year will shed the lights on innovative ways to boost gender equality and women empowerment. This year, “UN Women” is working in an innovative way to pave the path for women, especially in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure. However, the innovation of today is not only about leveraging new technologies that would narrow down the gender gap, but is also about arming the next generation of girls with the skills and opportunities to soar, and both knowledge and education to thrive. Speaking of this theme, the UN is holding a “gender-inclusive language fair”; an event that will take place on the 12th  and 13th of March to discuss the advancements of women’s rights and offer reflections on 2019’s theme (United Nations, 2019).

The international women’s day of each year is giving a chance to new ideas, and creative solutions that would empower women, advance the equality among the two genders, and reflect on the challenges women counter to take a place in our world, and assure that women are equally represented at the table. This day is an essential stop to remind the world of the powerful impact women will have if they are placed at the top of the list. In this context, there is no better conclusion than António Guterres (UN Secretary-General) saying “Let’s make sure women and girls can shape the policies, services and infrastructure that impact all our lives. And let’s support women and girls who are breaking down barriers to create a better world for everyone.”

Happy international women’s day for all the great women around the world!
