What is mental health?!

In Egypt, mental health isn’t given that much attention, where people aren’t taught the importance of mental health stability, being even more important than physical health.



Unfortunately, in Egypt, mental health isn’t given that much attention, where people aren’t taught the importance of mental health stability, being even more important than physical health.
And in order to take care of our mental health, lets first define what does mental health mean? And what does being mentally healthy regard for? How can we protect our mental health and how to properly nurture it?

What is mental health?
As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), Mental health is the state of socially and mentally well-being, knowing your potential abilities, the capability of coping properly with the stresses of life and being a productive person amongst your society and being able to contribute to the society. (1)
So basically, mental health is the ability to function normally throughout your daily life, not just through work or studies, but it’s also manifests in your daily interactions with other human beings and the way you intercept your life.

Why is it important to be mentally healthy?

GETTING IN SHAPE AND EXERCISING.
Being mentally healthy adds to having a proper mindset, a mindset that seeks a healthier lifestyle; which includes your physical form and state. Exercising is also a growing form of prescription for treating some mental issues such as Depression. And as the common Latin phrase proves it, which translates to “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”
It has also been proven that working out and exercises affects our mental state positively, by helping the body secrete endorphins which are mood enhancers.
Eating right is also another way to a healthier mind state. Studies has shown that in the past 50 years, unhealthy eating habits have been recorded as a significant factor in causing mental health issues, and vice versa. Therefore, giving your body proper nutrition will lead to a better functional ability both physically and mentally, so don’t forget to keep your diet as healthy and fresh as possible!

PROPER RESPONSIVE ABILITY TO STRESSES.
As students of MIU, there’s no doubt that we’re stressed all the time! Whether you have assignments or requirements, mid-terms, practical exams and finals; all those stressful events surely does deteriorate both our physical and mental health. Being mentally healthy indicates the ability to properly deal with these recurrent stresses with successful and fruitful results. However, stress can be seen as a helpful ladder if it is dealt with properly, which actually helps improve your memory and alertness.
But in cases of persistent stress, It can lead to: Loss of concentration, fear, anxiety, anger and many other complications. So make sure not to leave yourself under persistent Stresses for a long time!(2)
